Over the past few years, an unforeseen intersection of global and local circumstances has reinvigorated Cuba’s creative and alternative subcultures. Due to strict Covid-19 lockdowns, few overseas visitors have witnessed this vibrant renaissance. The Other Cuba shows an inspiring view of Cuba, rejecting the country’s usual cliché depiction. The series is a confluence of documentary photography and cinematic, conceptual image-making. Bouchard approached this project as a documentarist would, to uncover social truths while maintaining a subjective license to imbue his images with constructed narratives. Embedding himself deep in Cuban counterculture, he collaborated with his photographed subjects to envision how to best reflect their alternative lifestyle and cultural ethos.
